Chess in Oslo, from club evening to Grand Prix
Oslo chess lives in its clubs, which meet on weekday evenings in schools, seniors' centres and district houses from Majorstuen and Grünerløkka to Lambertseter and Stovner. Children train in the early evening, Grand Prix tournaments fill weeknights and weekends, and around the clubs there are a chess bar with a shop in Badstugata, summer boards outdoors and clubs right across Akershus.

Chess960 in Oslo: Fischer Random and Freestyle
In Norway the shuffled-start game goes by three names, Fischer Random, Fischersjakk and Freestyle, and around Oslo all three turned up in 2025 and 2026. Sjakklubben Stjernen on Grünerløkka played a Freestyle Grand Prix over Tuesday evenings in autumn 2025 and put Freestyle rapid and lightning tournaments on the federation calendar in 2026, Schakklubben av 1911 held an open Fischer Random tournament over two Mondays in autumn 2026, and Vestby hosted the Norwegian Fischer Random championship in February 2026. No weekly Chess960 evening was found.
Because the pieces behind the pawns start in one of 960 positions, opening preparation stops helping from the first move. Between club events the variant can be played online at ch960.com.

Reading a card
The cards rest on pages anyone can open: the Norwegian Chess Federation's club register and event calendar, the FIDE list of rated tournaments, the Oslo district associations, the business register and the clubs' own websites. Each card shows the date of its newest trace and quotes what that trace says.
Inside a list the order follows the date of the newest evidence, never a judgement of quality. Where no page answers a question, the card says "not stated by sources". What the status lines and the three source marks mean, and what the directory leaves out, is explained under how it is checked.
A new term, a new room?
Oslo clubs often move to another school or change their evening when the term starts, and new junior groups appear every autumn. If a card lags behind or a place is missing, send a short note with a link to the page that shows it.
